What changed on 12 October
The redeveloped Huanggang Port opened at 06:30 on 12 October 2026 and runs 24 hours.
Immigration for both sides now sits in one building in Futian.
The old Huanggang checkpoint and the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint on the Hong Kong side.
The shuttle that used to run between the two old checkpoints has stopped.
One queue, and where it slows down
You are checked for Hong Kong and the mainland in one go. When everything goes smoothly, that is quick. Officials expect about five minutes.
If someone ahead of you has a problem at either side's check, everyone behind them waits.
The automated gates did not work for us without an officer stepping in, so plan on the staffed lines.
At some crossings, family members with different kinds of ID can split into different lines. At Huanggang we all went through the staffed counters together, which took longer. With children, allow extra time.
On one Hong Kong-bound crossing, a traveller ahead of us went through the mainland check without trouble but had difficulty at the Hong Kong check. We waited a long time behind them before getting through.
How long the queue took
- Automated gate, with a Hong Kong ID card and a China travel ID
- About 5 minutes
- Staffed counter, with a foreign passport
- 15 to 20 minutes at the moment
From our own crossings. Your wait will differ. Crossed recently? Send us your time.
